Isegi pandeemia ei takista 2020. aasta MTV videomuusikaauhindade jagamist. Ikooniline auhinnasaade, millega tunnustatakse viimase aasta parimaid muusikavideoid, kavatseb jätkata plaanipäraselt ja nad kuulutasid välja oma nominentide täieliku nimekirja. Suurimate kandidaatide hulka kuuluvad Lady Gaga ja Ariana Grande, kellel on kummalgi 9 nominatsiooni. Enamik nende nimesid on tänu nende videole "Rain on Me" Gaga viimaselt albumilt Chromatica. Vahepeal on Billie Eilish ja The Weeknd otse taga 6 nominatsiooniga.
Kuna COVID-19 pandeemia on endiselt pooleli, lisas MTV ka kaks uhiuut auhinda: "Parim muusikavideo kodust" ja "Parim karantiininäitus". Fännid, kes soovivad oma lemmikute poolt hääletada, saavad minna ametlikule VMA lehele 15 erinevas kategoorias, sealhulgas "Aasta video" ja "Aasta artist".
